If you're looking for a spooky place to stay in Minnesota this fall, check out the St. James Hotel. Not only is there plenty of creepy history and ghost stories, the hotel even embraces it all, which is not usually the case with some of these places. If you ask at the front desk for the haunted rooms, they will direct you to the third floor. Check out more about the hotel and why you would want to visit.
Built in 1875, the hotel was one of the most modern at the time. Eleven businessmen realized that first-class lodging was needed in Red Wing because it was the wheat-trading center of the world. The classy four-story hotel thrived. It is one of the most beautiful—and most haunted hotels in Minnesota, which was unfortunately built atop Native American burial grounds, which is never a good idea.
The ghostly tales date back to 1890 when it was a temporary morgue for boat accident victims, who are allegedly still hanging out there to this day. It was also a hub for both business owners and travelers, and it appears that some of them either came back or never left, even in death. If you do ask for the haunted rooms, you will be directed to the third floor, which is where most of the sightings have taken place, and for good reason—Clara Lillyblad.
For a truly creepy experience, request room 310, which is Clara's room. Clara started out as a waitress at the hotel in 1914, but soon caught the attention of Charles Lillyblad, the owner. They fell in love, married, and Clara took over many aspects of the hotel. She elevated the food and had a sympathetic soft spot for the guests, once gifting a honeymooning couple with a fancy dinner even though they couldn't afford it.
Allegedly her spirit is still committed to excellence in the afterlife, moving around objects in the dining room when they don't reach her standards. Even the large dining room table, known as Clara's table, has been known to move on its own.
The other paranormal experiences haven't been quite as pleasant. There is supposedly a hostile ghost who haunts all floors, attacks guests, and slams doors. Another is rumored to be the ghost of a construction worker who fell to his death while working on the building. When guests see him on the grand staircase, he fades away.
Other guests have reported floating heads, crying babies, cold spots, and ghostly whispers. The basement is also said to be a hotbed of paranormal activity with faces staring back at you. With so much activity, it's no wonder the hotel is considered one of the most haunted.
