Built in 1904, the former Ledgelawn Inn is one of the original grand summer estates in Bar Harbor referred to by the elite simply as cottages. Ledgelawn may be the most haunted building in Bar Harbor, but its most famous ghost is a woman in white, a jilted bride who donned her wedding dress and hung herself from the rafters in the attic with her veil.
This bereaved ghost called Mary Margaret is spotted mostly on the third floor, but sometimes elsewhere in the building. When the mansion still operated as an inn, one guest had a very close encounter with Mary Margaret. This man claims that he not only witnessed the ghost bride enter the room, but that she actually got into bed with him! Because he didn’t want to incur her wrath, he just pretended as if nothing was wrong, shut his eyes tightly, and rolled over. One wonders how much sleep he got that night.
Expect to hear more ghost stories like this one as well to learn more about a variety of local paranormal happenings. The weird tales include the strange goings-on at otherwise opulent lodgings like the Balance Rock Inn, the legendary Bar Harbor Club, and several other supernatural hotspots about town.

Why Choose American Ghost Walks?
The Bar Harbor Ghost Walk was originally created by Maine's own Sally Lobkowicz and her Red Cloak Tours company dedicated to preserving New England history and folklore. In 2022, Red Cloak joined forces with American Ghost Walks and tour developer Allison Jornlin refreshed the script with new ghost stories and supernatural tales.

List of Services
-
Agamont ParkItem Link List Item 1
Begin at the beginning with tales from the indigenous peoples who once called the area home. Some ancient monster sightings from the Wabanaki Confederacy's oral tradition curiously align with more contemporary accounts of encounters with unknown animals.
-
Bar Harbor InnItem Link List Item 2
The Bar Harbor Inn was the scene of contemporary ghost reports and once the site of a private club for wealthy gentlemen called The Reading Room. One of the club's members, although not really a Ghostbuster, helped pave the way for authentic parapsychological research.
-
Shore PathItem Link List Item 3
Ghost stories abound along this scenic walkway as well as spectacular views of famous landmarks including the Egg Rock Lighthouse and Balance Rock. It's also the perfect setting for spooky seafaring yarns, tales of Maine's haunted lighthouses, and reports of a local sea serpent.
-
Local HauntsItem Link
Working people in town also report brushes with the unknown and the unexplained. Seemingly ordinary shops and apartments have become the backdrop for unexplained events. Even the sky above has been haunted by UFOs.

And much, much more... Write a description for this list item and include information that will interest site visitors. For example, you may want to describe a team member's experience, what makes a product special, or a unique service that you offer.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do you go inside any of the haunted buildings?
We focus on building exteriors and outdoor spaces. Businesses and public places are open for you to visit during regular business hours. Otherwise we respect the privacy of individuals and organizations and expect that our guests do the same.
-
Do guests really see ghosts on this tour?
We can never guarantee a supernatural encounter, but we will explain paranormal phenomena such as cold spots and residual hauntings. What we do guarantee: Our local connections and dedication to research means you'll get authentic accounts — in all their shocking detail.
-
Can I bring my pet?
Service animals are welcome. However, for liability issues, please leave your furry friends at home if you don’t require their assistance.
-
Is this ghost tour kid-appropriate?
While our tours do not contain anything too graphic or inappropriate, we find that kids that enjoy history have the best time. You know your children and that's left up to you. We do not recommend bringing children in strollers because sometimes that can be difficult with larger walking groups.
-
What if I'm late or cannot find my guide?
We do our best to answer calls and emails as promptly as they are received. Please make sure to leave a voicemail with the city and tour time. We try to accommodate travel and weather issues, but our public tours cannot wait for more than 10 minutes. Reschedules are available if the date you are interested in is not sold out.
-
What is your cancellation policy?
Because this is a limited capacity tour, all sales are final. If we cancel the tour because of weather or another event, we offer a full refund.
We will do our best to accommodate rescheduling requests, but cannot guarantee changes because other tours and dates might be sold out.
